Integrated Adventure
At Oliverian, integrated classes put students in direct contact with academic principles. This system allows for students to learn by applying knowledge and testing meaning rather than just reading about something second-hand. Our hope is that morning class time paired with an afternoon class experience gives a more direct personal involvement with concepts, which can produce a deeper understanding of material.
How that works…
The morning classes are comprised of Math, Social Science, Humanities, Science, and Spanish. In afternoon classes, students have an intense study of a topic within their chosen discipline (an example would be Rock Climbing within the discipline of adventure). Each morning class teacher is also involved with the afternoon class disciplines; fine arts, stewardship, or adventure. The integration occurs when the morning faculty presents how different areas of study play roles in the afternoon discipline. With the morning and afternoon faculty collaborating in an effort to integrate lessons students begin to gain a more diverse understanding and perspective in all of their courses.
Adventure Classes
Adventure classes are offered in two forms; seminar classes and quarter long intensive classes. Seminar classes are offered as extras for the Oliverian community and taught by faculty or students. These seminars are based around a specific topic. Seminar topics may include treatment of athletic injury, pottery, music workshops, multi-pitch climbing, gear maintenance, equipment repair, kayak rolling, or sport specific fitness seminars.
Quarter long courses are offered as part of the afternoon class schedule. These classes fall within one of three disciplines (fine arts, stewardship, or adventure). Listed below are the adventure courses that are either in session currently or were offered first quarter.
First Quarter: Rock Climbing I, Skateboarding
Second Quarter: Advanced Rock Climbing, Outdoor Living
