Counseling Groups at the Oliverian School
Making Positive Connections (Tuesdays)
This group is for students who may be struggling with some sort of social situation, whether it is their peer relationships, home relationships, or personal anxiety, this gives these students an opportunity to open up to each other, receive support from each other, and allow them to recognize that they are not alone in feeling certain ways. This group can help many of our students, but has started with only a select few. It focuses on making positive connections with others and helps our students develop social skills.
Making Changes (Wednesdays)
This group is to give students extra support surrounding their struggles around substance abuse, as well as give them a venue to become better educated of the short term and long term affects from their substance choices. This group is also designed for students to be able to identify triggers and ways to avoid those triggers. This group will be for students who feel they are struggling staying clean and/or would like some extra support around their substance usage. All student team members are able to strongly encourage/recommend struggling Advisees/Counselees to be a part of the group, and there will be some parents who would like to mandate their child to attend—this will be on a case-by-case basis.
Discussion Group (Thursdays)
This group was originally started to give students a venue for them to have positive, meaningful interactions with their peers, and to be able to challenge and provide peer feedback in an effective and constructive manner. The students have the opportunity to go out to dinner and bring a discussion question for all members to dissect. This group not only allows students to interact socially, but to it gives students the opportunity to really understand one another, and hear and respond to differences of opinions. The students in this group must be committed to sobriety, doing well behaviorally, and have a thirst for intellectual conversation. This group has started off small, but because of its success, we have slowly started to add other students to the group that support the group dynamic. This group began the first week in October, and hopefully will continue throughout the year.
Girls Group (Whenever necessary and/or upon request)
A structured all-female group that takes place at Smith House from 9:30pm- until the girls feel they have covered chosen topics or it is lights out. This group is to help our females recognize the struggles that lie ahead of them, whether it is with relationships, or transitioning into a post-secondary education, this group will give them an opportunity to meet with many of the women on campus that they come in contact with on a daily basis, and discuss issues that may be difficult to approach.
Smoking Cessation Group Possibility
Kerri Harrington and Jay DesTroisMaisons will start a Smoking Cessation Group if there is enough student interest. This course would run for 8 weeks, 1-hr. every Wednesday in the Meeting House—this is for students who have the desire to quit and will commit to the course. Please contact Kerri Harrington at:
kerriharrington@hotmail.com or 603-989-3396, for pricing or any other questions related to this group.
