As we approach the end of the winter, students are beginning to hear from prospective colleges about admissions for Fall 2008. Several of our seniors have already received 'fat' envelopes, inviting them to join Freshman classes across the nation. Congratulations, Seniors! Imagination Flouishes with 3-D Art

Art Director, Bessa Axelrod, strives to empower students with the opportunity to study and create works of art from an informed point of view at Oliverian’s “Black Mountain Art Center.” Integrated Arts 101 encourages students, whose interests may cross boundaries between various media and disciplines, to experience the vast range of art forms.

Students’ imaginations flourished while crafting 3-D projects for Integrated Arts class this semester. Bessa explains that “the purpose of the Box Sculptures Project was to explore the principal of composition as it applies to 3-dimensional art.” As the Box Sculptures took shape, some students were inspired freely while others required more guidance. Bessa considers that “everyone is an artist; they just have different methods of expressing it.”

Go Go Girl Power

Part of Oliverian’s “Caring Culture” consists of the “Girls Group” that meets every Wednesday evening on campus. The mission of the group is to support our female students with the struggles they currently endure and are likely to encounter in their future. While most female faculty members on campus attend the group, it really is the female student population that constitutes the dynamics of the group.

Over a table of ice-cream sundaes and cozy-slippered feet, discussions range from boys, clothes, and hair…to gender discrimination, parental relationships, and the many struggles young women face in today’s society. The girls listen to each other, offer support, and share related experiences all in a combined effort to empower their fellow females to conquer their battles and prosper as successful, confident women of the world.
