Congratulations on College Acceptance!

Congratulations to Alex Townsend for achieving three college acceptances so far! Florida Southern College in Lakeland, FL has offered a generous scholarship package to Alex. The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Savannah, GA, one of the nation’s premier art colleges, has also accepted Alex for enrollment, as has Guilford College in Greensboro, NC. Whichever school Alex chooses, he says he is, “incredibly eager to start college.”

Alex will first spend a semester in New Zealand with NOLS, the National Outdoor Leadership School, for his senior project and then return to walk on the graduation stage with his Oliverian class in June. Way to go Alex!!!

Stefan Cohen works at his internship with Jay Wolter's office1.22.2008
Congratulations on Internship
- A Message from Jay T. Wolter,
Founder and Director of Finance, The Oliverian School

With guidance from his advisor, Jonna Book, and Peter Stevens, Dean of Academics, senior student Stefan Cohen recently sought and obtained an internship with the office of Jay Wolter, Founder and Director of Finance. Mr. Stevens notes that this and other internship opportunities build upon identified student strengths. In the case of Stefan, he had previously been given opportunities through summer jobs in the area of finance and wanted an opportunity to craft a special learning opportunity. Mr. Wolter accepted Stefan’s resume, interviewed him and worked with the Oliverian team to craft objectives to measure the success of the internship. Early reports from Mr. Wolter are that Stefan is capable of exceeding those objectives. In his first portfolio progress report to the team, Mr. Wolter noted that Stefan “already exhibits a basic skill level that exceeds what he has seen from many entry level college graduates.... In his first day of internship work, Stefan was able to demonstrate a high level of deductive reasoning skill to solve a problem that had eluded the office team for several months. More importantly, he possesses the social skills to assertively communicate his understanding of material and readiness to move on, rather than listening endlessly to a bloke like me tell him what he has already figured out! A very impressive beginning.” Keep up the great work Stefan!

Darlene Ball, Oliverian School Nurse, delivers just the right dose of T.L.C. with medical treatments1.12.2008
Health Office News

The Oliverian School Health Office is a busy place with School Nurse Darleen Ball, RN handing out medications along with just the right dose of T.L.C. “First day of Ski Season means a busy evening” says Oliverian School Nurse, Darleen Ball pictured cleaning Alea Kern’s scraped forearm after a day on the slopes, “Snowboarding and skiing is a favorite for Oliverian Students but the first day always brings bumps, bruises and some sore muscles.”

The Health Office handles all medical issues for the students from keeping immunization records current, packaging and administering medication and intervening if the need arises for more serious emergency health care. Communication with parents, faculty and medical professionals with a holistic approach while advocating for the individual student is a large focus of Darleen’s responsibility. “The goal” states Darleen, “is wellness of mind and body and one definitely has an effect on the other. Sometimes, a ride off campus for a Hot Chocolate is the best medicine I can offer. I try to be family and friend as well as a nurse.”

With a love of students and a dedication to the school that seems to be shared by all the staff at Oliverian, The Health Office seeks to provide medical care for the students while maintaining healthy doses of good humor and fun.

Oliverian post-graduate student Greg Smith has been accepted to the State University of New York at Plattsburgh1.10.2008
Congratulations on College Acceptance
- A Message from Peter W. Stevens,
Dean of Academics

Congratulations to Greg Smith, Oliverian post-graduate student, on his acceptance at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh! Greg earned a high school diploma from Oliverian in June of 2007, and returned to Oliverian this past fall as a post-graduate. He pursued some coursework and did a semi-professional intern with the school’s media and public relations program, researching and writing about school events and activities for publication on the school’s website. Greg applied to and was accepted by SUNY Plattsburgh for mid-year enrollment, and he made the decision to take up this opportunity. He will start there in late January. We are thrilled that Greg has made this chance for himself, and pleased to have been a part of it. This is the first acceptance this year! We are off to a great start.

The 2007-08 "Opportunity for Learning" Campaign Begins

Construction of Phase II of the student union is well under way. The 2007-08 "Opportunity for Learning" Campaign to raise $150,000 to complete the new library and technology center is off to an amazing start. A $25,000 gift has generously been donated by one of our current families to help fund library books. This kind of generosity has propelled Oliverian to the forefront of alternative college preparatory schools.

If you would like to help or contribute to our 2007-08 "Opportunity for Learning" Campaign, please contact: Greg Vogel, Assistant Head of School, Phone 603-989-5100 ext. 7008, Email: gvogel@oliverianschool.org
