Halloween at the Oliverian School10.31.2007
What a Night for a Fright!

For many families with small children, Halloween is spent getting dressed up, going door to door, and yelling "trick or treat" as loud as the neighbors can stand it. Here at Oliveiran, we spent the day in costume. Some students dressed like corpses, colors, and pixies -- not to mention the student and faculty look-a-likes! As for the night’s activities, many students found themselves watching scary movies at the top of campus in the meeting house, while others participated in a campus wide scavenger hunt. It's pretty safe to say that even though we didn't get to wander around banging on doors and yelling, the campus was an alive, fun place to be this past Halloween.

Parents' Week a Success!

A message from Barclay Mackinnon, Head of School
I am pleased to announce we hosted an exceptional Parents' Weekend last week on the Oliverian campus. I would like to thank our students, teachers, and especially our parents for a successful event.

Highlights include:
• Intersession Trip presentation by Brian Sullivan, Director of Programs
• College planning meeting for senior parents with Peter Stevens, Dean of Academics
• Center for School Success presented by Beth Reed (CSS) and Peter Stevens
• New Student Union unveiled to parents

While all of these events were occurring, parents and students were meeting with their teachers, counselors, dorm parents, and advisors. Our families were able to see and experience first hand the extraordinary level of support their children receive in every aspect of their life here at Oliverian.

Oliverian School works because we employ a strength-based approach to working with our students. Students who struggle with learning can achieve measurable success in school and in life. Oliverian is dedicated to promoting this success through a community model of collaborative support among our students, their parents, and their teachers. Parents Weekend provides an excellent opportunity for a cooperative effort in guiding our students to move on to a successful and bright academic future!

Oliverian Soccer Wins vs. King George School!

The Oliverian Soccer team won vs. King George School at their home game on Friday, October 19. The win was especially welcome, as it coincided with Parents' Weekend and many parents were in attendance. The final score was 5-2. Phil Stevens scored a hat-trick (3 goals), while Graham Derbyshire and Mike Diel both scored a goal each. Evan Salvay did an amazing job working the ball and passing with incredible accuracy. The next game will be on Monday, October 21. Go Oliverian!

The new Music Studio creates more opportunities for students who love music10.18.2007
New Music Studio Enhances Music Program

They sang and we listened! Oliverian students voiced the need for a place to express their musical talent and we promptly created the New Music Studio. Music teacher Brett Warner, along with the help of his students, designed and created an amazing recording and rehearsal studio to enhance our music program. A large rehearsal area comes equipped with drums, guitars, microphones, amplifiers, etc. Students have full use of the digital recording studio as well as two sound rooms insulated for quiet practice and inspiration.

Students interested in recording music rather than performing greatly benefit from the new studio. One student, Sam, claims he knew nothing of recording music until now, “I love producing music…it is my passion but looking at producing software and equipment is like reading Chinese…Brett is making it into English for me and this studio is so impressive that I have the drive to learn about all of this… in ten years, when I win a grammy, I’m thanking Brett and this school on stage.”

Oliverian Soccer Plays First Home Game Ever

The morale of the team and fans was exceptionally high as Oliverian played Tilton School yesterday in the first home game in history. Although the Oliverian soccer team ultimatley suffered another upset, Graham Derbyshire continued to lead the team in goals with the only goal for Oliverian. Alex Gamble made save after save upsetting Tilton strikers left and right. With Oliverian playing better each game, things are looking up for the young team as it heads into its second home match, scheduled for Friday the 17th verses King George School.

Visual Arts Program Blossoms at Oliverian

We are pleased to announce that Bessa Axelrod has joined the Oliverian team as Art Director. Ms. Axelrod’s outstanding commitment enables us to expand our fine and visual arts program at the “Black Mountain Art Center.”

Bessa’s broad expertise will allow our students to explore a wide variety of art methods and materials including; drawing, painting, sculpture, pottery, art history and culture. Bessa’s foremost goal is “to create a supportive environment for artistic growth, self-expression and risk taking, and to help students develop an exceptional and individualized portfolio of artwork.”

Interested students will have the opportunity to participate in the Juried Regional Art Show sponsored by Plymouth State University. Students will also explore art history and the cultural contexts of art, an effort that will be supported by field trips to New England art museums and galleries. Bessa’s program extends “beyond the studio” and she will work with faculty to integrate art into our core curriculum and the life of the school.
