Experiential Learning Outside the Classroom

High School Summer Academic Programs

Students at The Oliverian Summer Session will have the opportunity to take some classes that are likely to be very different from those they have taken in the past. While students will be working with tutors in a traditional classroom and online for part of the day, the focus on the Summer Session is on experiential and integrated learning outside of the classroom. The learning is experiential because students are actively engaged in a learning activity, and it is integrated because each class will focus on some combination of academic disciplines, adventure, stewardship and the arts.

On the beautiful New Hampshire campus, students may play a key role in learning about and caring for our campus garden through a class experience that combines actual gardening, science, drawing and journaling. Other students may learn about rock climbing and conservation by integrating a day on the rocks with trail maintenance and photography.

Off-campus adventures, including some Friday/Saturday overnight trips also play an important role in the Summer Session. Imagine studying English while experiencing a Shakespearean play at a Renaissance Fair, or gaining new insights into the natural world while visiting the VINS Nature Center, New England’s leading raptor care and educational facility. Students may also learn more than they imagine through a rafting and camping trip in Maine or museum exploration trip to Boston. They may also discover a new appreciation for math and physics while riding a roller coaster at Six Flags New England. In every case, students will be challenged to connect these fun and interesting real life experiences with their learning.
