Kate Lewis

Physical Sciences/Advanced Math Teacher

Kate Lewis, Physical Sciences/Advanced Math Teacher, is a Texan to the core and very excited to join the Oliverian family and experience life in New England. Kate earned her BS in Mechanical Engineering from Texas Tech University and went on to earn a dual-MSc in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Groningen in the Netherlands and RWTH Aachen University in Germany.

Following her studies, Kate worked as a project engineer at a research hospital in the Netherlands. She collaborated with surgeons around the world to develop a machine which replicates the heart and lungs to keep kidneys functioning outside of the body. The machine, fondly referred to as the SophistiKate by her colleagues, is currently being used in research labs across Europe to test new therapies aiming to increase organ quality during transplantation.

Though she loved her time in the lab, Kate felt called to pursue a career working with kids. Returning to the states, she began working as a summer camp director and outdoor educator. Her most recent endeavor was running summer camp programs for hundreds of kids during the pandemic. Kate is looking forward to joining Oliverian where she can combine her love of science and math with her passion for helping kids grow into their best selves. In her free time, you can find Kate hiking, kayaking, fishing, cooking, and playing her bass guitar.

What do you love most about working at Oliverian?
“I love the focus Oliverian puts on building relationships with the students. The most impactful educators in my life have always been those who took the time to get to know me outside of the classroom. Those teachers shaped not only my academic life, they opened my eyes to the potential I had within and gave me the confidence to tackle any challenges I faced in college and beyond.”

What motivates you to work with young people?

“I love working with teenagers because of their unique mixture of curiosity and creativity. They are not afraid to question the world around them and I enjoy being there to encourage their curiosity and push them to think critically and formulate informed opinions. I also think teenagers have a knack for reminding us to not get wrapped up in the busyness of life, but rather to sit back and enjoy the moment.”
